The day I found out I'm boring

Spring 2016 and I’m on an adventure (remember those?). The stress and anxiety have taken a hold physically - I can’t even walk to the local shops and back without needing to stop for a rest. But still, I’m on an adventure. It’s time to leave employment. What do I do next?

This journey of discovery isn’t a solo expedition. Other courageous travellers have embarked too. Together we’re exploring our strengths and our weaknesses. What brings us alive? What are our natural gifts? I don’t yet have all the answers, but through the fog and the exhaustion I feel a tiny glimmer of hope.

One day, as part of our mission to understand ourselves better, we’re invited to take the Wealth Dynamics* test. I get comfy on the sofa, answer the questions, hit submit and head over to my inbox to read the results.

I’m livid.

How very dare it?

“Accumulators are reliable, get things done on time, and don’t make rash decisions. Accumulators make the best project managers, when a project needs to be delivered reliably on time and budget. They are the reliable organisers on the team.”

Yaaaaaaawn.

How the effing doodahs am I going to create a business I love based on THAT?

I mean.

Furious.

I stomp into the kitchen and read the report to Tom The Husband, who nods along in agreement. Not in agreement with my rage, you understand. In agreement with the effing dull as dishwater report.

He doesn’t think it’s dull. He thinks it’s accurate.

BUT HOW THE EFFING DOODAHS AM I GOING TO CREATE A BUSINESS I LOVE BASED ON THAT?????

It’s so BORing. All the other profiles look so much more fun!

Time passes. My indignation turns into resignation.

“Oh alright, I suppose I DO look for a time and place for everything.  And yes, I AM careful and reliable.”

…sigh…

A few weeks later I muster enough energy to dig out my make-up and catch a train to London for a meet-up (remember those?) with the other intrepid adventurers.

I sit nervously cradling my G&T. The anxiety never far away, the lump in my throat gets bigger. It’s a strange feeling. I know I’ve found my people, but at the same time I’m embarrassed. I want to have something big and exciting to share. But I don’t.

And then something unexpected happens.

My new friends gush enthusiastically about my strengths.

My eyes widen in surprise.

Ehhh??

They wish they could be organised and get shizzle done like me?

What the….???

As the penny slowly drops, I grow a little taller.

Suddenly I see where I fit in with these sparkly, shimmery souls who energise and inspire me.

My ‘boring’ skillset doesn’t need to mean a boring business. What if I could use my powers to work with these sparkly, shimmery, inspiring people? What if I could help them achieve all the things they dream of?

Four years on, and just the other day one of my In It Together clients told me what a relief it is to know she no longer has to worry about having zero steel in her Wealth Dynamics profile. I’m 44% steel, which means I have a good eye for detail and am strong at completing. Having me at her side fills the gap in her profile, leaving her free to blaze a trail!

The very thing that once felt boring to me? I now know that’s my super-power. And when I use it to support people doing amazing work in the world it feels fantastic!

Why am I telling you this?

Because I want you to know that your natural tendencies, preferences and gifts are perfect just as they are.

You have everything you need to do the things that only you can do.

You can’t be genius at everything, and you don’t have to be. We’re all wired differently, which is such brilliant news. It means all you need to do is find the support you need to fill the gap and BINGO! You’re knocking it out of the park.

We don’t have to do this alone and I can guarantee that the thing you’re struggling with is another person’s sweet spot.

If you need someone who can help you get things finished, who makes figuring out the details fun and who’ll cheer you on and keep you moving forward, let’s talk! You can book your Productivity Breakthrough Call here.

*Wealth Dynamics is “the profiling system for entrepreneurs to find their flow” created by Roger Hamilton. You can find out more here. In case you’re curious I’m an Accumulator with 44% steel, 36% tempo, 8% blaze and 12% dynamo. Basically that means I’m a great team player, reliable at getting things done, orderly with a good eye for detail and strong at completing. I’m not so great at extroverted peopling and LOOK AT ME-ing!
