Three questions to help you be more productive
A few weeks ago I wrote about self-awareness, the magic ingredient for success. I strongly believe that the better you know yourself, the easier you’ll find it to get stuff done.
There are so many productivity ‘solutions’ out there, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed or confused. To try too many new things at once and then give up because it’s not working quickly enough.
But if you approach things with curiosity and a view to learning more about yourself and what works for you? You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve, not just in the world of productivity, but in your business and your life too.
If you’re not sure where to start, your answers to these three questions will boost your self-awareness and help you be more productive:
1) What’s your why?
Why do you want to be more organised? How would life be different if you had clarity and focus and were better able to manage your to-do list and your time? Once you’re clear on your ‘why’, let that be your anchor and your motivation for change.
2) What’s your tendency?
Gretchen Rubin has developed a Four Tendencies framework that explains how we meet expectations. For instance, external accountability is key for some but won’t help others. Some people need to understand all the detail if they’re trying to create a new habit whilst others will naturally resist all expectations regardless. Understanding your tendency will help you make change that sticks.
You can take the free quiz and find out your tendency here.
3) Do you prefer digital or analogue?
Given a choice, would you rather use your computer/phone or a pen and paper to get yourself organised? Answer this one based on what feels natural and easy for you, not what’s most convenient (it’s convenient but not helpful to make notes on your phone if you never remember to look at them afterwards!). Once you know this, you can instantly eliminate tools which aren’t right for you. A to-do list app might sound good in theory, but if you prefer pen and paper just use pen and paper! Do you really need to buy that gorgeous diary, or does it feel easier and more natural to plan your time in a google calendar?
Take a few minutes to answer each of these questions now and you’ll boost your motivation, understand how to create habits that stick, and make better choices about which productivity tools will suit you best.
Let me know how you get on in the comments below!
(Developing self-awareness is key to the work I do with my 1:1 productivity mentoring clients, and I’ll be expanding on each of these three areas in future blog posts.)
